Where We Started

Picture
In the spring of 1980, nine female Houstonians with varied life histories gathered in Ann Alter’s home to consider the formation of a new organization, which eventually became Cancer Fighters of Houston, Inc.

Each founding member had some family member or close friend impacted by a diagnosis of cancer. At that time, one of the founding members, Joan Gordon, was engaged in her own personal journey with breast cancer. Her personal experience inspired and encouraged her friends to do something to help fight against the suffering cancer brings.

Each founding member contributed $100 to start this project and the organization grew from their efforts and their vision. In 1984, Joan Gordon left a memoriam to the organization of $10,000. This money began the seed grant program and sponsorship of the breast cancer screening facility called The Rose - Joan Gordon Center, now The Rose – Galleria.

Cancer Fighters of Houston was formed with the evolving vision of fundraising to assist the fight against cancer through research, education, and clinical service.
