FOUNDERS
In the spring of 1980, nine female Houstonians with varied life histories gathered in Ann Alter’s home to consider the formation of a new organization, which eventually became Cancer Fighters of Houston, Inc.
Each founding member had some family member or close friend impacted by a diagnosis of cancer. At that time, one of the founding members, Joan Gordon, was engaged in her own personal journey with breast cancer. Her personal experience inspired and encouraged her friends to do something to help fight against the suffering cancer brings.
Each founding member contributed $100 to start this project and the organization grew from their efforts and their vision. In 1984, Joan Gordon left a memoriam to the organization of $10,000. This money began the seed grant program and sponsorship of the breast cancer screening facility called The Rose - Joan Gordon Center, now The Rose – Galleria.
Cancer Fighters of Houston was formed with the evolving vision of fundraising to assist the fight against cancer through research, education, and clinical service.

From The President |
Dear Cancer Fighters,
2019 is well underway and we are busily enacting and proposing plans to support the mission of Cancer Fighters of Houston, Inc.(CFOH) We are pleased that our membership has continued to increase. Clearly many people resonate with our three prong focus supporting Service, Research and Education. Many new technology advances are making their way into our organization with our website, links, electronic check-in at our events, giving programs through Randalls (#12607 at the register) and Amazon Smile (designate Cancer Fighters). More will be in the works such as Kroger, HEB, Whole Foods and FlipGive. Our goal is more communication with our membership, maintaining better records from sponsored events and connect with new donation sources. |
I am delighted to lead a group of very committed, dedicated and compassionate women. Certainly the wisdom to form this organization in 1980 is visionary. I wanted to share our giving report for Research and Service that we have received from Baylor College of Medicine, MD Anderson, Methodist Research Institute and The Rose.
We hope this donation report will inspire present and future giving as CFOH has been a very responsible steward of all funds given to the organization. We look forward to seeing everyone at CFOH Events in 2018. Please bring a friend and help us share our mission of success in Houston philanthropy.
Respectfully and thankfully submitted,
Denise M. Fredette MS, PT, MT, CSTS, NCTMB
CFOH 2019 President
